Ten Boston Winter Activities

After the Christmas buzz wears off and the twinkling lights come down (and we're paying off our credit card bills from holiday shopping), Boston in the winter is a polar vortex and it often feels like there's no warmth in the future.  While it's easy to stay in, eat copious amounts of soup & binge on Netflix (I just finished Orange Is The New Black) there's lots of fun - inexpensive - things to do in this wonderful city.  I've compiled a list of a few of my favorite activities, and a couple I want to try!  So put down the remote, put away the take out, grab your down coat, mittens - hat - scarf and have some fun!

1.
Want to laugh? Tuesday night ImprovAsylum has $5 house team shows.  I've been to about a dozen of these and it is hilarious, 2.5 hours of nonstop laughter.  I'm always blown away by how talented these actors are - making witty skits all improvised!  You'll see four different groups, with an intermission in between, and then a fifth group "the lottery" comprised of various actors from previous groups.  There's a bar in the lobby so grab a glass of wine/beer/cocktail & enjoy the show!

They have shows 7 days a week, with all tickets under $20, you really can't go wrong!

Grab dinner
Herehere or here before the show, and then head Here after the show!

2.  Looking for something sweet?  Met Back Bay-  you can sip on 4 different types of hot chocolate - Classic, Spicy Mexican, Salted Almond & Peppermint sample sized for $14.  Or you can add some booze to it for $4.  You can even pick one of the 4 to make a big drink for $10.

3. Head to the museums!
The MFA has quite a few great exhibits going currently.  Goya "Order & Disorder" runs through January 19th & Hollywood Glamour "Fashions & Jewelry from the Silver Screen" runs through March 8th.  I went to see both of them a few weeks ago & really enjoyed them!

The MFA is free every Wednesday 4-9:45pm.  There's a special MLK open house next Monday (Jan 19th) - free admission ALL DAY!  Typically it's $25 for Adults, $23 for students & free for students with college of the Fenway ID's (and perhaps other schools, I'm not sure)

I'd suggest getting to the museum earlier in the day rather than later so you're not elbowing your way to see things!
Cheese anyone?
Oh Tara Donovan how I love you so, and your innovative way of using plastic cups to make this incredible installation.

4.  More museums!  The ICA is a beautiful contemporary art museum which sits right on the waterfront & has an absolute killer view.  I haven't been there in far too long, so it's definitely on my list of places to check out!

Every Thursday from 5-9pm it's free!
Tuesday - Sunday it's $15 for Adults & $10 for students.  It's closed on Mondays, except for most holidays.

5.  Feeling creative?  The Clayroom in Brookline - one of my favorites!  My friend suprised me for my birthday a few years ago and have been back a few times since, it's so fun!  Remember painting pottery when you were younger, and your bowl turned out to be a hot mess of splattered color? No? Just me? Alright.  Well this is similar - you pick out pottery, paint it and 5 days later you can pick up your masterpiece!

Also it's BYOB - there's a liquor store on the next block, and Anna's taqueria, anddddd Pizza. So it's perfect.

There's lots of specials too - Monday is half off studio fees, Tuesday night is pizza night & Wednesday after 6 is 21+ Wine & cheese night.  Check out there site for more info!

6. One word.  DOUGHNUTS. okay so not quite an event but Blackbird, located in The Gallows in the South End now has doughnuts - Thursday through Sunday, opens at 7am - until sell out!

7. Cheers for beers! Beer Summit January 23rd & 24th $45-55

8.  Craving sweets?  Taste of Chocolate in Harvard Square, um yes please.  Saturday 24th, 1-2pm, with lots of treats & freebies

9. What's up Doc?  20th Annual Bugs Bunny Film Festival!  The Brattle Theatre in Harvard Square - February 14th - 21st.  Tickets haven't gone on sale yet (although they're all under $10!) but check back soon!

10.  Still Feelin' creative?  Check out Paint Nite events through out the city, $45.
The Paint Bar on Newbury street has events daily - $35.  There's a singles event on January 29th - $25 for paint & drink, you just have to bring another single friend of the opposite sex.  "Paint, date & drink"

Time to bundle up & try out a few of these!
What activities are you looking forward to this winter?

Have a great rest of the week & stay warm!
